During a drug shortage, a hospital pharmacist must manage hundreds of medications with limited time and attention. We are not going to make you do all of that. To demonstrate the type of decisions that these pharmacists must make, we will simulate a simple scenario with six drugs, showing you a glimpse of how these decision makers prioritize where to focus their attention.
In our simulation, you are working at a local hospital and have to manage six drugs at a time. You are given a list of drugs and you hold some beliefs about those drugs (represented by the table below along with how much you trust those values). Your task is to give your estimate as to which two drugs are most urgent and the three top factors as to WHY you chose that.
We will then compare your decisions against the learning agent from our paper Modeling Bounded Rationality in Drug Shortage Pharmacists Using Attention-Guided Dynamic Decomposition. The reason for this demonstration is to show you the complexity of the decision space that these pharmacists face daily.
Please note that this is a simulation and not a real drug shortage. The drugs and values are not real and the results are not real. In the real world, these pharmacists are facing a much larger decision space in the hundreds or thousands depending on the hospital and are not able to deeply investigate many drugs, yet they maintain a stable supply.
